About the book
Naomi King, soft spoken, loyal, and easily overlooked, has a gift. She sees what others can't see. Intuition, she calls it. Others in Stoney Ridge don't know what to make of it and dismiss her hunches and inklings altogether.

When a young woman arrives at the Inn at Eagle Hill with a shocking secret about Tobe Schrock, Naomi fears the worst. She can't ignore the feeling that something sinister is at work--- something more than a threat to the tenuous love begun between her and Tobe.

As signs mount, they begin to point to Jake Hertzler, the elusive mastermind behind Schrock Investments' downfall. Soon, events spiral hopelessly out of control and Naomi must decide whether to listen to her head or her heart.

In this riveting conclusion to The Inn at Eagle Hill series, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher pulls out all the stops with a fast-paced tale of deception, revelation, and just the right dose of romance.

IN THE FIELD OF GRACE by Tessa Afshar

“The story thread dealing with the authorship presented in In the Field of Grace is a product of my imagination and has no basis in historical facts ….. This story can in no way replace the transformative power that the reader will encounter in the Scripture.”

Tessa Afshar shares a fictional account of the story of Ruth and Boaz and the life each had before coming together as man and wife. The tale nicely reveals the life of Ruth and her friendship with Naomi whom Ruth’s mother never truly was receiving of and her sons Chilion and Mahlon whom she marries and eventually leading the to courtship and marriage to Boaz. The story of Boaz describes his union with wife Judith who dies and communicates on her deathbed that Boaz finds happiness and joy once she is gone. After Chilion and Mahlon die from fever, Naomi and Ruth leave Moab and return to Naomi’s homeland of Bethlehem in Judah to seek food and shelter in the home she previously left on a journey with her husband and sons. The fictional story elaborates on this journey of Naomi and Ruth while travelling from Moab to Bethlehem in a pleasantly descriptive manner having the reader to believe they are on this journey as well. Once reaching their destination Boaz and Ruth form a friendship that points toward marriage and leads into the account of their great-grandson David’s explanation to his son Solomon about the importance of his ancestral writings and the relevance of kinsmanship to Ruth, a Moabite.

Ms. Afshar’s fictional account of the story of Naomi and Ruth expresses the true meaning of loving another person in the name of God verbally and through the actions Ruth performs for her mother-in-law. The character depth given Naomi while in desolation over the death of her two sons and husband shows the elegance and sophistication of a respectable and quality writer. I recommend this novel to Bible devotees who enjoy contemplating the common everyday living condition in the life of biblical figures.

'I LOVE BOOKS' presents Special Guest Author H. H. FOWLER

HOLY SHIFT! 365 DAILY MEDITATIONS from A COURSE IN MIRACLES by Robert Holden, PhD.

This meditation book is based on an original book, A Course in Miracles written in old Christian English by two psychology professors at Columbia University whom neither were spiritual but offers spiritual philosophy which is conveyed in their book. All meditation verses notate the entry utilized by Holden from the Course textbook, Workbook, the Manual for Teachers, Psychotherapy, or Song of Prayer supplement. A Course in Miracles goal is to teach people to make an “exchange of separation for salvation” maintaining the exchange is an inner gift. One of the psychologist authors stated she began to have dreams of a spiritual nature and decided to share her spiritual experiences and their meanings with the world.

The Acknowledgment section is where Holden states, “A Course in Miracles has blessed my life and work.” Holden is also a student of the course program and uses its philosophy and information in his speaking engagements and workshops he organizes around the world.

Holy Shift! representing A Course in Miracles is similar to the Book of Proverbs in the Bible and reads like a sage of the ancient world sharing their perception and wisdom with those who listen. Holden warns not to replace this course with the Bible but rather use it as an accompaniment with other Bible study supplements. The book has an uplifting appeal for people needing further encouragement outside of their regular Biblical daily reading. I recommend to those who are curious regarding A Course in Miracles and want more understanding of its philosophy and teachings.

THE GROWER'S GIFT Book Blast

The Spring of 2102 only brought false hope...

Series: Progeny of Time #1

Publication Date: May 15, 2014
Genre: YA Dystopian

The future is bleak in the year 2102. The planet is in chaos and the weather patterns have completely shifted, turning most of the world into an uninhabited wasteland.

The rich and powerful of North America have pulled back into the six remaining megacities, erasing all trace of a central government and leaving millions displaced by the environmental crisis to fend for themselves in the dying world. Sixteen-year-old Maya has a gift, a power she thinks can heal the earth and make it habitable again. A gift that she must learn to harness. The school for the gifted in Neo York is the only place where she can learn to control her power and reach her potential.

Yet the school is not what it seems. Ran by the ruthless head of the city of Neo York, the school’s only objective is to extract the powers of the gifted and then discard them. Only Ty, heir to the city, can keep Maya from being destroyed there.

But Ty has a secret and his loyalty to his family has never wavered. Will his growing love for Maya be strong enough to save them both?

EXCERPT
Ty stopped by a nearly empty stall, behind which a woman with a heavily wrinkled face and dark grey hair sat. Only a small jewelry box and a bracelet made of brown grass and clear blue beads lay on the tabletop in front of her. No one was trading anything for those two things.

She smiled up at him, though her grey eyes were so unfocused he doubted she saw more than his outline. He picked up the box and examined the flowers worked into its surfaces. Meticulously carved, not a line out of place. His little sister Eve would love it.

“How much for the box?” he asked the woman.

“Some bread if you have it. Or at least enough flour to make some,” the woman said in a raspy voice.

“All I have to trade is money.”

“Money? What would I do with money?” the woman chuckled, then a coughing fit took her.

Ty sat the box back on the tabletop.

“No, no. Take it. And this bracelet to go with it. It is made from real aquamarine and wheat grass. It will ward away any and all evil energy from the person who wears it. Aquamarine’s even been known to stop the flow of magic right in its tracks. Here, hold out your arm, I will affix it for you.”

Ty ignored Rober’s shocked gasp as he stretched out his right arm. A cool stream of water seemed to flow up his arm as soon as the stones touched his skin. Maybe it really worked. Usually, the freezing cold only ever ran down his arm. Not that he liked to think of his power at all.

“How much for the box and the bracelet?”

The woman smiled again. “Keep your money, young man. These two things are the last of what I have to trade, unless you count the clothes on my back. Only then I would have to walk around naked.”

The woman laughed at her own dark joke and slowly rose from her stool.

Vanna Smythe is the author of the Anniversary of the Veil fantasy trilogy and The Grower's Gift, the first book in a new YA dystopian series. She has been writing creatively since her early teens, though one could say her creative writing efforts started long before that. While still in kindergarten, she once tore up a library book to make alphabet soup, and has been fascinated with what words can do, the pictures and worlds they can create, ever since.

The Progeny of Time YA Dystopian series was inspired by the bleak future presented in The Hunger Games, the fight between good and evil played out in Harry Potter, and the TV show Heroes, but with a totally unique story and twist. The story is equally fun for teens as well as adults. The second book in the series will be released in Summer 2014.

CONFESSIONS OF A SELF-HELP WRITER by Benjamin DeHaven

“So Jonathan (African American) and I were each other’s key to a world neither of us had ever known….It was Jonathan’s group of friends that just couldn’t get past our friendship….In their eyes, I didn’t understand the blues and I wasn’t invited.”

“So I’ll just have to stick to ghostwriting self-help books for now, I guess. Damn it.”

Benjamin DeHaven and Michael Enzo were friends until Michael backed out on a business deal leaving the country with the money arising out of the sale of New Orleans newspaper, the Nola Shopper. DeHaven comes to the conclusion that the only way to get revenge is to publish the personal journal of Michael Enzo who as Dehaven states is a fugitive from justice for fraud and hunted by organized crime. Each entry of Michael Enzo’s journal discloses personal information and events surrounding his life journey through his gambling, drugs, and women that necessitated an essential determination to create capital opportunities to support his rich addictions.

The novel is truly interesting in its format of journal entries with intertwining philosophical quips and is unmistakably clear and concise as to the nature of events taking place and revealing them with wit and satirical humor. Conversely, the rhythm is somewhat unbalanced while reading triggering uncertainty as to which person is divulging the story. I recommend this novel to persons interested in Michael Enzo’s life as revealed in his personal journal entries and whether he will ever compensate those, he befriended yet defrauded.

SUSAN DAFFRON Book Tour and Giveaway

CHEZ STINKY by Susan C. Daffron Excerpt

This is part of the scene where the main character, Kat, is at work in her office and gets a phone call letting her know she has inherited a house in the small town of Alpine Grove.
~~~
“My name is Larry Lowell and I’m a lawyer in the town of Alpine Grove. I’m afraid I have some bad news.”
Kat nodded. How could this day possibly get any worse? “What news?”
“Your great-aunt Abigail has died. I’m very sorry for your loss.”
“Aunt Abigail? Really?” Kat flashed on a memory of a thin white-haired woman wearing a floppy peasant skirt.  “Wow, I haven’t seen her in years and I think my mother lost track of her. What happened?”
Larry cleared his throat and said quietly, “I’m not entirely sure of the precise details, but I know she was ill. She was an ‘unusual’ person, but smart and funny, even right before she passed away. I talked to her just a few weeks ago. She came into my office to talk about her estate.”
Kat raised her eyebrows, “Her estate?”
“Yes, you are named the principal beneficiary of her estate. You have inherited all of her assets up here in Alpine Grove.”
“Assets? What exactly do you mean by assets?”
Larry cleared his throat again. “She has a home up here, but it’s not in the greatest shape at the moment. With a little TLC, you could fix it up. However, there are a few stipulations, as well.”
What was this? Twenty Questions? Getting information out of this guy could take a while. Fortunately, as a technical writer, Kat had years of practice extracting information from recalcitrant people.
“Mr. Lowell, what exactly do you mean by ‘stipulations’?”
“It seems, Ms. Stevens, that there are some animals residing on the property. Abigail loved her babies, as she called them, and she wanted to make sure that they would be well taken care of after she was gone. She remembered that you love animals, and that’s why she wanted you to be their new mom as she would say.”
Their mom? This guy had to be kidding. Maternal she definitely was not. “So Mr. Lowell, what type of animals are we talking about here? I mean, I don’t know anything about cows or chickens or ducks or anything. I have one cat and I live in a 950-square-foot apartment.”
“Please call me Larry. We’ll probably be talking to each other a lot over the next few weeks. It would be best if we could meet in person. Would you like to set up a time to talk about this matter and go over the details?”
“Okay Larry. You can call me Kat. So how many animals are we talking about?”
“Abigail had four dogs and a number of cats. When I went to the property, I don’t think I actually saw them all, so I’m not entirely sure. But we think at least five cats. Abigail left detailed descriptions of the animals, but people had a habit of dumping stray cats out at her place when they no longer could take care of them, so I may have missed some outside barn cats.”
Once he finally spit it out, Larry could share some serious facts. After digesting the lawyer’s information dump for a moment, finally Kat said, “I think you’re right. We should talk about this in person. Could you give me directions?”
Larry related how to get to his office in Alpine Grove and agreed to meet Kat on Saturday afternoon. They would then drive out to the property. He promised to explain the rest of the details when they met.
Kat hung up the phone and stared blankly at her Half Dome poster again. Her quiet and slightly boring life was about to get a lot more complicated.
